1. Center

Ideally, Derek Stepan would be a solid No. 2 if the Rangers could find a No. 1. Paul Stastny is too expensive, so barring a trade, bringing in a No. 3 makes sense. If Dominic Moore agrees to a new contract, that covers the fourth line. The Rangers hope either J.T. Miller or Oscar Lindberg is ready. Other possibilities: David Legwand (33, 6-2, 204, 14-37-51 for Nashville/Detroit); Steve Ott (31, 9-11-20 for Buffalo before trade).

2. Righthanded

Minus Anton Stralman, Kevin Klein could move up to the second pair, but landing Dan Boyle would leave the Klein-John Moore pairing intact. If not, perhaps Stephane Robidas or Sami Salo, both 37, get a look. Mark Fayne (27) would be interesting.

3. Size up front

Not a lot available. To replace Brian Boyle, Dustin Penner (31, 6-4, 247, 14-21-35 in 67 games for Los Angeles/Washington) might cost about $2 million.
