Kandinov Twins Go 1-1 In PSAL Tennis Semifinals

Cardozo's Efraim Kandinov defeated teammate John Malhame,

10-8, yesterday at the National Tennis Center in Flushing to advance to the

PSAL boys individual tennis final. He will face Hunter's David Gopstein on

Monday at 3 p.m. Gopstein topped Cardozo's Michael Kandinov, 10-4, to make it

to the final. Efraim and Michael Kandinov are twins.

In a boys doubles semifinal, Cardozo's Alex Dobrin and Josh Liederman

topped Bryant's Pablo Villatero and Young Kim, 10-1, to advance to Monday's 3

p.m. final. The two will face Hunter's Matt Seiden and Jeffrey Wan, who topped

Cardozo's Rex Lam and Danny Zigman, 10-5.

"It's tough to keep everyone focused." Cardozo coach Howie Arons said. "But

to win [last week's] PSAL city team championship is a big thing. It is

something you remember forever. It gets us ready for [Mayor's Cup] tournament

play."

Arons said he isn't overly concerned about his players burning out with

nearly a month of playoff tennis that ends the season. "It carries over for

us," he said. "All this tennis at the end of the year seems like a lot, but

they're playing their best tennis of the year. This [was] our 14th consecutive

city championship, and the 15th overall. They're all excited to play in the

Mayor's Cup."

In the girls city doubles final, Stephanie Meng and Eileen Lin of Francis

Lewis defeated Monica Myers and Kimberly Chan of Brooklyn Tech, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Mayor's Cup. The 14th annual Mayor's Cup starts tomorrow at the National

Tennis Center with the team championships, which runs through Sunday, weather

permitting. Tomorrow, the girls varsity starts at 2 p.m. The boys follow at 4.

The Sunday schedule is girls semifinals at 9 a.m.; boys semis at 10:30 a.m.;

girls final at noon; boys final at 1:30 p.m.

The Mayor's Cup individual singles and doubles competitions begin Tuesday

at 3:30 p.m., continuing Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., Thursday at 11 a.m. and next

Friday at 3:30 p.m.

The semifinals will be June 9 at 10 a.m. The finals will be June 10. The

girls singles and doubles finals will begin at 10:30 a.m. Boys singles and

doubles finals will begin at noon. The awards ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m.

The Mayor's Cup is sponsored by the New York Junior Tennis League and the U.S.

Tennis Association.

Boys Handball

Francis Lewis Tops Cardozo. Thomas Elferis and Jason Wong defeated Steven

Chen and Ben Tran, 21-10, to lead Francis Lewis over Cardozo for the boys

Queens Borough doubles championship at 196th Street and 73rd Avenue. In the

semifinals, Elferis and Wong topped Cardozo's Alex Chea and Tim Wum, 21-20. The

city championship will be at the same park Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Baseball

Xaverian 2, Mount St. Michael 1: Danny Christiansen tossed a one-hitter

with nine strikeouts and Tom Curry knocked in the decisive run with a sacrifice

fly in the sixth for top-seeded Xavieran (25-7), which advances to the winners

bracket of the CHSAA Class A intersectionals.

CHSAA Playoff Sites. The following games are today at 4 p.m.: Christ the

King-Molloy, which was originally at Fordham, has been moved to Molloy College

in Rockville Centre, L.I. Mount St. Michael vs. Iona Prep goes to Fordham. St.

Joseph by the Sea vs. Monsignor Farrell remains at St. John's.

Manhattan Signs Two. Manhattan baseball coach Steve Trimper announced that

Sylvester Gutierrez of St. Francis Prep and Ken Gleason of Christ the King have

signed letters of intent. Gutierrez, a 2000 Newsday all-city selection, will

play either third base or in the outfield for the Jaspers. Gleason, a

righthander who consistently throws 88-90 mph, will compete for a spot in the

starting rotation. Gleason also had a .420 batting average for the Royals.

Soccer

Youth Games Tryouts. Martin Jacobson, who coaches boys soccer at Martin

Luther King High School, will have a series of tryout for the U.S. Youth Games

in the coming week. Boys 15 and younger are eligible for the team, which will

compete Aug. 1-5 in Birmingham, Ala. Tryouts for the 18-member team are: Monday

at 4 p.m. at Riverside Park, 103rd Street and Riverside Drive; Tuesday, 4

p.m., Flushing Meadow Park, Field 1; Thursday, 4 p.m., Flushing Meadow Park,

Field 1; June 11, 4 p.m., Riverside Park. The final selections will be made at
