NBC Sports announced a deal Monday with The R&A to carry the British Open for 12 years beginning in 2017, with coverage on both NBC-owned Golf Channel and NBC's broadcast outlet, which will mark a return of the event to broadcast TV for the first time since ABC last aired it in 2009.
The tournament has been carried since 1962 by ABC and/or ESPN, which will continue to televise the event for the next two summers.
The NBC agreement also includes other events, including the Women's British Open and The Senior Open Championship. NBC, the long-time home of the U.S. Open, lost that event to Fox beginning with this month's tournament.
"We've had a rewarding relationship with Peter Dawson and the R&A," ESPN said in a statement. We look forward to televising The Open Championship and other R&A championships this year and next year and wish them the best in the future."
