Costa Philippou is a former finalist in the Golden Gloves, the most well-known amateur boxing tournament in New York and beyond.

The Ray Longo-trained Philippou, from Long Island by way of Cyprus, used every bit of that boxing background and combined it with an excellent display of takedown defense to beat Court McGee by unanimous decision in their UFC on FX 2 middleweight bout Friday night in Sydney, Australia.

Philippou landed powerful right uppercuts and left hooks and dominated the first two rounds against the Season 11 "Ultimate Fighter" winner. McGee came back in the third in desperate need of scoring points and a possible finish. He landed more shots and got a takedown, but Philippou had already done enough to win the fight. The three judges scored it 29-28.
