Anthony Pettis vs. Jose Aldo?

There's a certain ceremonial dance that occurs at UFC post-fight news conferences.

Members of the assembled media take the lead and ask who so and so will fight next, and  UFC president Dana White says he doesn't like to make fights right after a night of fights.

It seems like a silly song and dance, but sometimes, someone bumps into the DJ table and the song changes.

After UFC 156, White threw this nugget out there for consumption (and subsequent tweets and blog posts such as this one): Lightweight title contender Anthony Pettis wants to be the next one in line to challenge Jose Aldo for his UFC featherweight title.

White said he received a text message from Pettis shortly before the news conference began saying that he wants to drop 10 pounds to fight Aldo after Aldo just went five rounds with Frankie Edgar.

Pettis has twice been promised a shot at the UFC lightweight title, but neither materialized be it because of an injury, being bumped by a rematch or taking a fight and losing it instead of waiting out the title shot.

Pettis is coming off a dominant first-round TKO of Donald Cerrone in January and was believed to be getting the winner of UFC champion Ben Henderson vs. Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez in April.

Perhaps "Showtime" Pettis doesn't want to wait until late in 2013 to get a crack at a title again. Aldo embraced the idea when asked about it at the news conference.
