UFC on Fox: Lavar Johnson unloads on Pat Barry
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Lavar Johnson ran out of gas.
Of course, that after he threw more than 40 unanswered punches in a row (plus a knee!) to the head and body of Pat Barry in their heavyweight bout at UFC on Fox 3 insde the Izod Center on Saturday night.
The last of those 40-plus punches was a left hook, and finally Barry fell to the ground. Johnson turned, raised his weary arm in the air and relished in the first-round win by technical knockout.
"Pat's a very tough guy," Johnson said. "Is that a knockout or a TKO? I'm trying to get that bonus check, Dana."
Johnson was referring to UFC president Dana White, who awards additional money for the best fight, submission and knockout at each fight night.
This fight was exactly what Johnson and Barry promised, an action-filled bout with no one stopping until they'll forced to stop.
At one point, Barry (7-5), known for his stellar kickboxing and tremendous lack of a ground game, shot in on Johnson. Johnson stuffed it, but it got Barry away from the cage and away from another of Johnson's heavy-handed flurries.
Barry then managed to mount Johnson, move to side control and attempt an Americana submission move. It left most on-lookers with knowledge of Barry's game in a shocked quietness.
"I know he's been working hard on his ground game," Johnson said.
Johnson (17-5) was able to fight it off and get back to his feet. Shortly thereafter, it was Barry back on the ground. Only this time it was because of a TKO with 22 seconds left in the first round.
