A mixed martial arts blog about UFC, Bellator and other MMA promotions and fighters.
In the second fight, Cain Velasquez became the first fighter in UFC history to connect on more than 100 significant strikes and stick 10 or more takedowns in the same bout. That says something about the skills of heavyweight champion Velasquez -- but it also shows the ability of Junior Dos Santos to take a punch and keep coming forward for more. “I wasn't looking for the finish," Velasquez...Read more »
If you happen to be staying in the same hotel as UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez this week in Houston, please look both ways before merging into the hallway. You just might see 240 pounds of man flying toward you at full steam. (Not double-checking if the coast is clear would be akin to letting Bald Bull knock out Little Mac with his bull charge in "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out" just...Read more »
An Octagon arrived on Long Island, and on Saturday, UFC fighters were standing inside it. If their attire had been different -- topless with board shorts rather than the T-shirts and jeans they did wear -- that would be a significant piece of news. But, alas, professional mixed martial arts remains illegal in New York for reasons that are less about sports and more about politics. It is somewhat...Read more »

Fitch will go against BJJ world champion Paulo Miyao in a 20-minute submission only match, Renzo Gracie told Newsday on Thursday. "He's a fighter," Gracie said. "I couldn't beleive when we offered him such a tough opponent, he took it right away and not even a question." Two...Read more »

But the question after the fight and again Thursday morning is this: Did Palhares hold the submission move too long after Pierce tapped 31 seconds into the fight? UFC officials thought so and chose not to award Palhares the $50,000 submission of the night bonus, citing...Read more »

Here's a sneak peek at a new Frank Shamrock documentary airing Thursday at 11 p.m. on Spike TV. "Shamrock: Bound by Blood" includes a look at his MMA career, his backstory as an imprisoned teen and an on-camera meeting with his estranged adoptive brother Ken Shamrock. If you've read Shamrock's autobiography (pretty good read, by the way), this is the movie version. Sort of. ...Read more »
I understand the Internet was built around assigning numbers to lists of things, but for the sake of fun, let's be different today. Rather than give you the psychologically comfortable number or five or 10 reasons to watch UFC Fight Night in Brazil on Wednesday night, here are "some" reasons to spend some of your evening tuned into Fox Sports 1 for the fights. -- All 10 bouts are live...Read more »
These days, such commentary usually winds up on Twitter, lost to many of you in your timelines or -- gasp! -- not even seen by those not on Twitter. So, here were my thoughts as I watched the second episode of "UFC Primetime" leading up to Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos at UFC 166 on Oct. 19, 2013, in Houston. -- Um, wherever those opening beach scenes are from, yeah, let’s go there....Read more »
