A mixed martial arts blog about UFC, Bellator and other MMA promotions and fighters.
A loss and an injury later, Anthony Leone gets a shot at the Bellator bantamweight title this Friday.
The loss was his, the injury was his opponent's. Rafael Silva beat Leone, who grew up in Center Moriches, last October in the Bellator 2013 Summer Series tournament finale to earn the title shot against Eduardo Dantas. But Silva injured his knee last month and had to pull out of the fight,...Read more »

Since his upset win over Tim Boetsch at the end of 2012, Costas Philippou has dropped his last two fights.

Long Island may not be Brazil when it comes to producing the volume of mixed martial arts fighters, but this little spot has come quite far in the seven years since East Meadow's Matt Serra knocked out Georges St-Pierre in 2007.
There are seven Long Islanders in the UFC at the moment, plus others in Bellator, ONE FC and elsewhere.
The followng list is by no means exhaustive, but have...Read more »
Ryan LaFlare's first year in the UFC has taken him to new levels -- on frequent flyer programs.
His first fight was in Sweden, his second in Brazil and his third in California. And that was just in 2013.
LaFlare, from Lindenhurst has his next fight booked now and, yes, he's taking another big trip. LaFlare (10-0, 3-0 UFC) will fight welterweight John Howard at UFC Fight Night in Abu...Read more »
The “Rocky” storyline worked its way into a UFC pre-fight narrative again this past week when fired barista Patrick Cummins was chosen to fight former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier in the co-main event at UFC 170 on 10 days’ notice.
Perhaps the movie reference works here, perhaps not. We'll say it does, just so we can relay another one here -- that of Uniondale’s Aljamain Sterling.

Where people are and what they do in the immediate moment of receiving big news is always interesting to learn about, which is why I always ask that question.
Since this particular space of the vast Internet concerns itself with mixed martial arts, from time to time, we'll take a look at how MMA fighters say they reacted when they got the call telling them their next fight would be in the...Read more »
Uniondale's Aljamain Sterling now has a contract with the UFC and will fight Lucas Martins at UFC 170 in Las Vegas on Feb. 22. The fight was agreed to by both participants, but the bout agreements had not yet been signed and received, a UFC official said Tuesday night.
Martins (13-1) has won two straight, including a first round submission of Junior Hernandez last September.

Gian Villante had been itching to fight in the octagon again. Sparring with the likes of UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and 10th-ranked middleweight Costas Philippou for the past six weeks is nice and all, but that's just training.
The Levittown-raised Villante will do the same over the next eight weeks but with a different end goal. He'll be the one fighting in the cage against light...Read more »
Costas Philippou associates most things in life with food. Tired during a workout when there's no fight to train for? Take a break and eat something. A fun night with friends? Hey, where's the food? Celebrating an accomplishment? Let's eat!
That's all well and good . . . except when he's training for a fight and it's the holiday season and he needs to drop to 186 pounds by Jan. 14.
