A mixed martial arts blog about UFC, Bellator and other MMA promotions and fighters.
For the past several years, Gilbert Melendez has been considered the best lightweight outside of the UFC. As Strikeforce became less and less relevant under the Zuffa banner, talk focused on possible matchups for Melendez and top lightweights in the UFC.
But since the calendar turned to 2012, the former Strikeforce champion (21-2) has fought one time -- a split decision win over Josh Thomson...Read more »
As quickly as the outrage over Jon Fitch being cut by the UFC spread across the Internet and social media last week, so too did calls for the former welterweight title contender to join Bellator or the World Series of Fighting
Even Dana White, the president of the UFC and the guy who cut Fitch, said as much.
"I'm glad that so many people are behind him," White said in the media...Read more »
A few weeks ago, Gian Villante was unsure of his next career opportunity.
Would the Strikeforce light heavyweight from Levittown, who was not on the promotion's final card last Saturday, become part of the UFC, or would he have to go searching for work elsewhere? (Zuffa owns both Strikeforce and UFC.)
On Tuesday night, those watching "UFC Tonight" on Fuel got that answer.

Here's the last time we'll be able to say this: Come watch the Strikeforce weigh-in live stream with us.

A combination of anonymously sourced reports and some rumors point to Strikeforce promoting its final event on Jan. 12, 2012, in Oklahoma City. If true (and it is widely believed that it is), it will mark the culmination of a slow (then quick) fall from No. 2 MMA promotion since being purchased by Zuffa, the parent company to UFC. There are likely many factors that contributed to this point, some...Read more »
Three title fights plus top heavyweight Daniel Cormier will headline the Jan. 12 Strikeforce card in Oklahoma City, the Zuffa-owned promotion announced Thursday.
The card could possibly be the last for Strikeforce, TMZ reported Thursday night citing sources. Whether that proves to be true or not, it is a pretty explosive card for Showtime to air, especially after the past two Strikeforce cards...Read more »
One week into the polling on our "MMA 20 questions" feature, the majority of voters don't expect Strikeforce to last as a stand-alone fight promotion after its current deal with Showtime expires.
Perhaps the cancelations of its two most recent scheduled fight cards -- Sept. 29 (Gilbert Melendez vs. Pat Healy) and Nov. 3 (Daniel Cormier vs. Frank Mir) -- has something to do with that.

There a Strikeforce conference call last week with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker and fighters Gilbert Melendez, Pat Healy, Gian Villate and Guto Inocente to help promote their scheduled Sept. 29 fights in Sacramento, Calif.
Of course, that card was canceled at the beginning of this week, but since the call happened, the quotes were documented and the stories won't be written anytime soon, here's...Read more »
The news about Strikeforce canceling its Sept. 29 card broke late for those of us on the east coast. Around 1:10 a.m., the press release email arrived. About 30 seconds later, Twitter exploded with the report.
And that's how most of the fighters on the undercard found out.
"Pretty crazy," Gian Villante wrote in a text message to Newsday on Monday morning.
The Levittown-based...Read more »
