The big UFC welterweight ranking shakeup

This should come as no surprise (and not just because we told you last week to expect this to happen), but this week's UFC welterweight rankings look significantly different than they did last week.

There's another one of those UFC fight cards this weekend -- UFC 171 in Dallas on Saturday, to be exact. Whether or not the card is "stacked" and the fights are "sick" is up to each person to determine for themselves.

Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson set for UFC 165

At lunch in Manhattan this past January, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was flipping through photos via an app on his phone. The poster of those photos was Alexander Gustafsson.

At the time, Jones said he was interested in learning more about the Swedish light heavyweight. Jones said Gustafsson seemed like a cool guy, but "I'm still gonna knock him out, though."

Robbie Lawler had little time to mount an offense against Josh Koscheck at UFC 157. But, he did make the most of it.

Being outgrappled by Koscheck for the first three-plus minutes of their welterweight bout, Lawler managed to get on top with about 1:20 left.

Report: Jon Fitch cut from UFC

Jon Fitch, once a welterweight title contender and in the middle of many top 10 pound-for-pound lists, was released by the UFC on Tuesday. MMA Fighting first reported the news Wednesday.

Fitch was one of 16 fighters cut from the world's most prominent MMA organization, the report said. Also included among the cuts were Freeport native Jay Hieron and light heavyweight veteran Vladimir Matyushenko.

UFC 156: Demian Maia out-Fitches Jon Fitch

The Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia bout at UFC 156 was billed as submission defense specialist vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission specialist.

What we got Saturday night in Las Vegas was . . . exactly that.

Maia took down Fitch with ease in each round, controlling his body with back mounts, body triangles and submission attempts. At times, Maia looked like a human backpack.
