Where people are and what they do in the immediate moment of receiving big news is always interesting to learn about, which is why I always ask that question.

Since this particular space of the vast Internet concerns itself with mixed martial arts, from time to time, we'll take a look at how MMA fighters say they reacted when they got the call telling them their next fight would be in the...

UFC changes fight bonus structure

Back in the day, you know, like, about a week or so ago, one so-so submission on an entire fight card would yield a sweet $50,000 bonus paycheck to a UFC fighter, even if there were far more exciting fights that night.

That's a goner, now.

The UFC announced earlier this week that they are eliminating the submission of the night and knockout of the night bonuses and replacing them with...

Stop complaining about MMA judging and do something about it

Most of those who complain about the judging in mixed martial arts don't necessarily understand the nuances of it. Even fighters and trainers may not get appreciate the subtleties that go into determining who won a fight and who didn't.

(Insert disclaimer here: This is not to absolve all judges from making some horrible decisions, since there are quite a few examples of that out there.)

As...

Long Island's Chris Weidman, the reigning UFC middleweight champion, added one more piece of hardware to his new home in Dix Hills.

After beating Anderson Silva twice in less than six months in 2013 -- Silva had never lost in the UFC before that -- Weidman was named the Fighter of the Year at the sixth annual World MMA Awards in Las Vegas last Friday.

Weidman beat out Vitor Belfort,...

NEWARK -- Ricardo Lamas stood a few yards away from the thing he has spent the past six years chasing: the UFC championship belt.

He did not move any closer toward attaining it Tuesday as Lamas -- and the belt -- made an appearance at Super Bowl Media Day at the Prudential Center.

The belt was real, albeit not any championship belt in particular. But it was gold, it was heavy and it...

Long Island's Aljamain Sterling signs with UFC

Uniondale's Aljamain Sterling now has a contract with the UFC and will fight Lucas Martins at UFC 170 in Las Vegas on Feb. 22. The fight was agreed to by both participants, but the bout agreements had not yet been signed and received, a UFC official said Tuesday night.

Martins (13-1) has won two straight, including a first round submission of Junior Hernandez last September.

The timing...

I came across a pretty cool portrait photo of UFC middleweight Costas Philippou over the weekend by Rick Wenner. Turns out there's more to it than just a nice photo.

It's part of a series of portraits done by Wenner, who wanted to show his support for legalizing mixed martial arts in New York.

"My concept was to photograph as many MMA fighters and show a different side of...

Ronda Rousey , right, from the United States

The matchup of Ronda Rousey, an Olympic judo bronze medalist, against Sara McMann, an Olympic wrestling silver medalist, is intriguing on a number of levels.

But, for the moment, let's take a look at the shrewd timing of its occurrence -- UFC 170 on Feb. 22 in Las Vegas.

Yes, the fight comes about eight weeks after Rousey last defended her women's bantamweight title against Miesha Tate...

(Credit: Newsday/Mario Gonzalez)

Gian Villante had been itching to fight in the octagon again. Sparring with the likes of UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and 10th-ranked middleweight Costas Philippou for the past six weeks is nice and all, but that's just training.

The Levittown-raised Villante will do the same over the next eight weeks but with a different end goal. He'll be the one fighting in the cage against light...

Fun food quotes from Costas Philippou

UFC fighter Costa Philippou prepares to spar

(Credit: James Escher)

Costas Philippou associates most things in life with food. Tired during a workout when there's no fight to train for? Take a break and eat something. A fun night with friends? Hey, where's the food? Celebrating an accomplishment? Let's eat!

That's all well and good . . . except when he's training for a fight and it's the holiday season and he needs to drop to 186 pounds by Jan. 14.

“People...
