Chris Weidman up and running (sort of) day after knee surgery

Breakfast of champion, or a champion's breakfast? Either

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman had both of his knees scoped on Tuesday night at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

On Wednesday, he was already up and lightly jogging at rehab.

Here's the clip the Baldwin native posted to his Instagram account.

Al Iaquinta, in a suit, on TV, in a commercial

Most UFC fans who live outside the Long Island area first were introduced to Al Iaquinta shirtless or wearing headgear to protect his ears on "The Ultimate Fighter Live" (Season 15) back in 2012.

Two years and three straight UFC wins later, the Wantagh-based Iaquinta can be seen wearing a suit and delivering the closing line in a new commercial alongside Serra-Longo teammate and middleweight...

Gian Villante, UFC fighter and heartthrob?

The actual, more traditional journalism story advancing Gian Villante’s fight on Sunday against Fabio Maldonado at UFC Fight Night will arrive on the Internet later this week and perhaps in Sunday’s newspaper as well.

For now, here’s a little bonus material from our interview last week. Just too funny to keep out of public view.

Most fighters use a nickname to help establish, ironically,...

Long Island may not be Brazil when it comes to producing the volume of mixed martial arts fighters, but this little spot has come quite far in the seven years since East Meadow's Matt Serra knocked out Georges St-Pierre in 2007.

There are seven Long Islanders in the UFC at the moment, plus others in Bellator, ONE FC and elsewhere.

The followng list is by no means exhaustive, but have...

Long Island's Chris Weidman, the reigning UFC middleweight champion, added one more piece of hardware to his new home in Dix Hills.

After beating Anderson Silva twice in less than six months in 2013 -- Silva had never lost in the UFC before that -- Weidman was named the Fighter of the Year at the sixth annual World MMA Awards in Las Vegas last Friday.

Weidman beat out Vitor Belfort,...

Thinking about UFC 168 . . .

LAS VEGAS -- As I watch the sun rise up from the mountains in the desert from my hotel room, I'm reminded that it is a new day, which means more time to process all the things seen at UFC 168 several hours ago.

Here are of the thoughts I'm generating at the moment after watching a series of fights that stirred up more than $6.2 million in gate revenue for the UFC:

-- Miesha Tate vs....

Things to watch for at UFC 168

LAS VEGAS -- Some thoughts about what to look for at UFC 168 on Saturday night (besides just the punching and the kicking and the grappling):

-- How does Uriah Hall respond after two losses and that "He's not a fighter" quote by UFC president Dana White from the last time he fought? That should be quite interesting to watch unfold against Chris Leben.

-- Can Miesha Tate push...

A stocking stuffer for Matt Serra

Matt Serra before his fight against Matt Hughes

Matt Serra and Chris Weidman will be linked in MMA history books forever, and not just because Serra is Weidman's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor.

Both are from Long Island. Both train under Ray Longo. Both pulled off monumental upsets to win world titles against the best there ever was in their respective weight classes.

So when you converse at length with UFC commentator Joe Rogan about...

MMA champ trains to the beat of . . . country music

Chris Weidman, right, and Anderson Silva battle it

(Credit: AP)

Nothing about a Tim McGraw-Faith Hill ballad suggests mixed martial arts.

It's a pretty country duet performed by pretty country people, for sure, but it sounds a smidge out of place inside the gritty garage-type gym for punching and kicking and people.

Yet, there was "It's Your Love" coming through the sound system at Ray Longo and Chris Weidman's Power MMA in Garden City...

Here's a little clip of a training session between UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman hitting pads with trainer Ray Longo one night this past week in Garden City.

It was produced by Weintraub Films, which has been documenting Weidman's camp for UFC 168.

That should be an interesting piece when it's completed and released.
