A mixed martial arts blog about UFC, Bellator and other MMA promotions and fighters.
The second biggest weight class in the UFC is looking mighty thin these days.
Once the most glamorous division in the world's most prominent mixed martial arts promotion, the UFC's light heavyweight division lacks depth. Part of that can be attributed to the normal ebb and flow of fighters (and sports in general), as well as the expansion of other weight classes.
Also, don't underestimate...Read more »
A new clip from EA Sports hit YouTube on Monday entitled "EA Sports UFC - Vision trailer."
It opens with a disclaimer slate that reads, "May Contain Content Inappropriate for Children."
What it should say is this: "May Not Contain Content From The Actual Game as the Word 'Trailer' Would Imply."
But that's too much copy for one screen in large font.
So,...Read more »
Jose Aldo hasn't lost a fight in eight years and yet the UFC featherweight champion from Brazil gets shown very little love as the best pound-for-pound fighter MMA fighter in the world.
That's because of who's ahead of him. Heck, Aldo even lost out to anyone not already listed as an option.
In our latest Fightin' Words reader poll, Jon Jones took the plurality of votes (a total of 1,835...Read more »
An Octagon arrived on Long Island, and on Saturday, UFC fighters were standing inside it.
If their attire had been different -- topless with board shorts rather than the T-shirts and jeans they did wear -- that would be a significant piece of news.
But, alas, professional mixed martial arts remains illegal in New York for reasons that are less about sports and more about politics.
It...Read more »
Weigh-ins for UFC 165 in Toronto (watch them live here) are a few hours away now, which will conclude with main-eventers Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson hitting the scales.
The day of weigh-ins before a fight is the busiest day of fight week, said Jones. This during a week filled with media obligations, cutting the remaining few pounds to hit 205, workouts, and throwing out the first pitch...Read more »
Jon Jones is better suited keeping his strikes inside the cage. His first pitch at the Blue Jays-Yankees game on Tuesday was a smidge or two out of the strike zone.
But at least he reached the plate, and did so from the mound, two things many celebrity first-pitch throwers rarely do.
Jones, who is in Toronto to defend his light heavyweight title against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165,...Read more »
The title shot legitimacy of Glover Teixeira is often met with disdain or negativity. Why? Well, for one, that's what MMA fans do. (Ask Chris Weidman . . . after he won the title.)
And second, they say Teixeira has yet to fight a top-10 light heavyweight in the UFC.
Both of those points are true.
Both of those points aren't much of an argument to make in claiming Teixeira doesn't...Read more »
NEWARK -- The man who used to call himself the champion and walk around with a championship belt without actually winning a title fight nearly earned the ability to rightfully call himself "champion."
Chael Sonnen was 27 seconds away from winning the light heavyweight title at UFC 159 on Saturday at the Prudential Center.
Not necessarily because he was dominating Jon Jones....Read more »
Three months back, there were plates of chicken parm, Caesar's salad and other treats going around the table at Carmine's in Manhattan.
Assorted MMA media were there, as were Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen. The two UFC light heavyweights, there to promote the newest season of "The Ultimate Fighter" as coaches, were cordial and friendly.
There was even an amusing phone call that...Read more »
Why is that we never seem satisfied with greatness at the time when it is great?
It's hard to argue against Jon Jones being the best light heavyweight champion the UFC has seen, even if he is one title defense away from tying Tito Ortiz's UFC-record five in a row. Jones goes for No. 5 this Saturday against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 in Newark.
But many want to dream about what's next for...Read more »
