Thiago Alves did not receive medical clearance to fight at UFC 111 when New Jersey doctors discovered a brain abnormality, leaving matchmaker Joe Silva scrambling Thursday afternoon to find a replacement.

Alves was scheduled to fight top welterweight contender Jon Fitch on the pay-per-view card at the Prudential Center in Newark. Alves will undergo additional medical testing.

Fitch will now fight Ben Saunders, who was originally scheduled to fight Jake Ellenberger.

The UFC 111 card is now 10 bouts instead of 11. Moving up from the undercard to the main PPV card is the Kurt Pellegrino-Fabricio Camoes lightweight bout. Pellegrino is a Jersey guy, so expect to hear a raucous crowd.

Ellenberger, who spent months training and preparing for this fight but is now idle for the weekend in Newark, still will receive his show money and win money.
