SOCHI, Russia - U.S. luger Kate Hansen has spotted the “wolf” of Sochi.
A 17-second YouTube video posted by the Winter Olympian shows what she says is a wolf slinking through the halls of her Olympic dorm in Sochi, Russia.
“I'm pretty sure this is a wolf wandering my hall in Sochi,” she wrote in the description of the YouTube video.
The video has been viewed more than 1 million times, and more than 1,100 people have commented, debating whether the animal was a wolf or simply a stray dog.
“That’s just a regular dog, the kind in the hundreds of thousands in Russia,” one YouTube user wrote.
Another said it’s “obvious that it’s a Siberian husky."
But some commenters were a bit more creative with their predictions.
“This looks like a wolf hybrid, probably malamute. Either way, it seems very docile and probably friendly.”
It seems like most people agree — the “wolf” is really a dog.
Stray dogs in Sochi have been a hot topic of conversation at the 2014 Winter Olympics. An overpopulation of street dogs has been a problem in Sochi, so much so that the government had been euthanizing strays in the run-up to the Games.
Hansen wasn’t convinced.
She also asked her 20,000 Twitter followers about the “wolf.”
“Wolf in my hall?!? #SochiProblems #SochiFail,” the 21-year-old athlete tweeted along with a link to the YouTube video from her verified Twitter account.
The tweet had received more than 2,100 retweets and 700 favorites by Thursday afternoon, U.S. time.
It’s possible Hansen fooled us all with the help of comedian and TV host Jimmy Kimmel, who has been known to stage YouTube videos — such as "Twerking Girl on Fire" — that have gone viral.
The video is being called a hoax by various media outlets, including Inside Edition, which reportedly received an email from Sandy Caligore of the U.S. Luge Association confirming the prank.
Curiously, the late night comedian also tweeted a link to the video Thursday, with these words of wisdom: “I always say, if you're going to cry wolf - get an actual wolf to cry with.”
