North Carolina’s Dean Smith took over as head coach, but the U.S. again looked mortal. The United States beat Puerto Rico by one and Czechoslovakia by five in group play, then snuck by the Soviet Union, 89-84, in the semifinals. Dantley was big in the gold-medal game, though, scoring 30 points to lead the U.S. to a 95-74 win over Yugoslavia.
