Wally Backman will return next season to manage Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced on Tuesday. Last season, Backman guided the Mets' top minor league affiliate to an 81-63 record, good enough to win a division title. Backman's future with the Mets had been in doubt. He has long aspired to manage in the big leagues, though that chance may not come with the Mets in the near future. At the end...Read more »
The Yankees officially signed utilityman Brendan Ryan to a two-year, $5-million deal on Monday. The contract also includes a mutual option for 2016, the club announced. The sides initially agreed to the terms of the new deal in November.
Ryan, 31, will likely serve as insurance behind Derek Jeter, who is expected to start at shortstop. Despite his offensive deficiencies, Ryan brings elite...Read more »
Yankees free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano told a newspaper in the Dominican Republic on Thursday that he never asked for $300 million from the Yankees or any other team.
"No one has heard that from my mouth and never will listen, if you're going to talk about anything other than contract," Cano said (via Google Translation from the El Dia report).

David Wright can do just about anything.
The Mets captain can hit for average and power. He has a great eye at the plate. He's even become a decent fielder at third base.
But we now know one thing he can't do: Sing.
Wright, Matt Harvey, Lucas Duda, Justin Turner (because of course Justin Turner is involved) and several other Mets were filmed singing and wishing fans a happy holiday....Read more »
The Yankees reached a deal to sign free agent catcher Brian McCann pending a physical, according to multiple reports.
Ken Rosenthal reports the deal is for five years, $85 million with a sixth year vesting option that could push the total value to $100 million.
McCann, 29, is a career .277 hitter with a .350 on-base percentage and .823 on-base plus slugging percentage. He's hit at least...Read more »
Outfielder Chris Young has agreed to a one-year deal with the Mets pending a physical, Newsday has confirmed.
The deal is for $7.25 million. That would be a slight pay cut from the $8.5 million Young made last season with the Athletics, but it's in line with what similar outfielders have earned so far this winter: David Murphy signed with the Indians for two years and $12 million while Marlon...Read more »
Josh Johnson, David Murphy, Tim Hudson and Marlon Byrd are already off the board. Tim Lincecum and Hunter Pence never even got to the shop-around stage.
But there are plenty of enticing free agents left for interested teams to engage.
Of the remaining players on the market, here's the best lineup we could put together (2013 salary in parenthesis):
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF ($9 million)
2....Read more »
While Mariano Rivera was comfortably locking down games in the ninth inning for the Yankees in seasons past, fans and media members were free to wonder: “Who will be Mo’s heir?”
Nearly every hard-throwing prospect in the Yankees’ system or fleetingly successful set-up man was entered in the discussion. Phil Hughes. Joba Chamberlain. Mark Melancon. J.B. Cox (for those of you with particularly...Read more »
If one thing has become increasingly clear early in this offseason, it's that the Mets will trade either Ike Davis or Lucas Duda. This accomplishes two goals for the Mets, who must resolve a logjam at first base while capitalizing on a market in which power is scarce.
Yes, both Davis and Duda have their flaws. But both have also flashed enough power for rival teams to take a chance that...Read more »
Shortstop Ruben Tejada, who has fallen out of favor with the Mets, is reportedly considering a grievance against the club for intentionally delaying his free agency by one season.
According to a Yahoo! Sports report published on Sunday night, the potential grievance stems from the Mets' decision to delay Tejada's planned September call-up, a move that kept him one day short of earning enough...Read more »
