Fishing season for salmon, trout begins in Hudson Valley

Fishermen throughout the Hudson Valley pulled on their hip boots and waders in a rite of spring that involves a winter of preparation. In the past month, the state Department of Conservation began releasing fish raised in its dozen hatcheries to more than 1,200 public streams, smaller rivers, lakes and ponds. The process helps to restore native species and "increase fishing opportunities," said DEC spokeswoman Lori Severino. Fishing season begins today. (April 1, 2013)
