A 'prediction run' at Dublin Deck
When a spot is really hot, the usual move is to “run” over and hang out – but on Sunday morning the staff at Dublin Deck in Patchogue would like you to actually run away from its waterside location…and then return, following a three-mile jaunt.
Dublin Deck has been a popular summer evening stop for several seasons, with large crowds typically arriving for late-night DJ parties, live music and socializing on the venue’s patio and at its tiki bar situated only footsteps from the Patchogue River. However, on Aug. 24, Dublin is hosting a morning affair that kicks off at 9:15 a.m.
Presented by the Sayville Running Company (49 Main St., Sayville, 631-589-5700), this event is what’s known as a “prediction run.” At heart, it’s a true footrace -- but unlike similar contests, participants in this sort of sprint must submit the time that they think will be their clocked finish in advance -- then try to conclude the race at or close to that personally prophesied pace. The winner is the contestant who most closely completes the competition at his or her guesstimated time -- which adds the unusual aspect of a run where the advantages of speed and endurance are eliminated – in fact, one could presumably finish last and still win, should that person match the completion time initially surmised. (No cover charge to compete; no watches allowed.) The top 10 runners will win prizes, including gift certificates to the aforementioned Sayville Running Company and a pair of Spenco brand “Total Support Sandals,” among other giveaways.
Once the run is done, guests, both entrant or otherwise, can stick around for drinks and a half-price brunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., followed by a set from alt-reggae band Oogie Wawa at 4 p.m. For more information, check out Dublin Deck online at facebook.com/dublindecktikibarandgrill and dublindeck.com.
