Life on Long Island
DJs working summer-only spots for the weekend
There are always places to go to dance on the Island, but the warm weather opens venues that are otherwise shuttered between the chill of fall and the beginning of spring — and those establishments tend to bring in some of the biggest names in the dance music industry to spin at their parties. The result: nightclub goers get a brief chance to catch these celebrity DJs on the Hamptons circuit or by the water (or both) in person and in the mix. Here are three of those summer-only spots that are featuring big names in their booths this weekend:
Cabana 435 in Freeport (435 Woodcleft Ave.) is one of those hangs that comes alive when the Nautical Mile does the same, and on Friday, June 29 the canal-side Cabana will have Miss Jennifer lead its weekly “Privilege Fridays” party. The Queens-based selector has risen from working her home borough to becoming an in-demand regular on the Manhattan scene, and her events tend to get a solid response. She’ll be dropping dance beats at this bash that kicks off at 5 p.m., and also features mixers Dimitri, GinaMarie, Rob James and Jinks (dress code is casual). For more details, call 516-378-7575 or head online to cabana435.com and facebook.com/Cabana435.
Although he seems to have graduated to working at some other clubs this year during the weekends, DJ Theo will be back at the spot he is most identified with, the Neptune Beach Club in East Quogue on Saturday, June 30 for a daytime session starting sometime after 1 p.m. One of the Island’s most successful DJs, Theo has made a name for himself, putting out albums (the “Nervous Nitelife” series on the Nervous Records label) and spinning at clubs around the East Coast and overseas on the club mecca island of Ibiza. Opening sets by Gabe Ramos and Chris G; arrive early as long, long lines are very likely. Call 631-653-8737 or head online to neptunebeachclub.net and facebook.com/NeptuneBeachClub (plus try web.me.com for table reservations).
Georgica Restaurant and Lounge in Wainscott has kicked off another strong summer, and on Saturday, June 30, the upscale venue will be bringing in Semu "DJ Reach" Namakajo to conduct a night filled with eclectic, classic-filled, upbeat grooves. Best known as a resident mixer from the NBC show "Last Call with Carson Daly," Reach is a frequent draw at both NYC and Las Vegas clubs, and is often hired to work at large, celebrity-powered functions. The man will start working sometime after 9 p.m.; table reservations would be a wise way to gain entry (versus the heavy lines usually found waiting to enter at Georgica), so call 631-537-6255 or check online at georgicarestaurant.com and facebook.com/GeorgicaRestaurantandLounge for more information.
