Life on Long Island
HarborFest 2012 in Sag Harbor continues
The 2012 version of Sag Harbor’s HarborFest has been a big hit so far this weekend, and there’s still one day left.
An annual festival, this family friendly bash sweeps across the whole town for three days, filling Main Street with people, local and tourist alike.
The events happen over on the Long Wharf, which is the dock near Bay Street. Dozens of vendors and a number of food trucks are set up there, selling all sorts of snacks, treats, clothing and jewelry.
Meanwhile, the nearby waters are involved as well, with boat displays and whaling skiff races -- in which crews of four row oar-powered boats similar those used to hunt the seas during the days when Sag Harbor was an internationally famed whaling port. Looking to land the prized Whalers Cup, the elimination rounds already took place on Saturday, Sept. 15, with the semifinals set for noon and the finals for 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16.
However, the Sunday schedule includes more than just bites and boats. There's a Pilates class at 9:30 a.m. on the beach at Long Wharf, behind the wind mill.
At 10 a.m. there's a paddleboarding demo, also at the beach, and a 10:30 a.m. town walking tour (“Women’s Lives”).
At 11:30 a.m., the beach features a tug-of-war contest that’s open to kids. Live music starts at noon with area-popular blues guitarist Jim Turner.
In addition, a number of Sag restaurants will be competing in a Best Clam Chowder contest at noon (the public gets to sample and vote, $5, at Long Wharf) and a clam-shucking challenge at 3:30 p.m. (register at the Food Pantry Table on Long Wharf).
Then again, there are other items of possible interest to be found off-dock, as many of the shops and eateries on Main Street do sidewalk sales and specials to coordinate with the HarborFest.
With Sunday’s weather forecast a prediction for sunny skies and warm temperatures, anyone seeking a bit more Hamptons summer fun should keep this celebration in mind. Just be patient for parking, as the lots have been especially full.
