Life on Long Island
The Bow-Wow Beach Bash
From June through September, many of the main events around the Island (especially the Hamptons) are the special benefits, happenings that use parties and get-togethers to help bring donations to charities. But once Labor Day has come and gone, the benefits scheduled for outdoors seems to diminish quickly – as many people start readjusting to the idea of grabbing drinks, dancing and mingling indoors to avoid the escalating autumn chill.
However, for those not ready to forsake fun and fundraising out-of-doors, there’s a gathering on Wednesday, Sept. 12, that will not only help a cause, but allow all to partake of some summer-style good times – and furthermore, there’s no drive to the East End necessary.
Starting at 6 p.m., the “Bow-Wow Beach Bash” will take place at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury (8325 Jericho Tpke., 516-692-8000, cresthollow.com), providing an occasion that entails playing in the sand, a buffet and cocktails – all to lend a financial hand to the evening’s host.
Put together by Pet Peeves Inc. – a 501C3, nonprofit organization that raises support and awareness for Long Island's animal shelters and rescue groups – the function will go down in the club's “Beach Arena,” a sandy section of the Crest Hollow designed for shoreline-based sports (beach soccer, beach tennis, beach volleyball, cross-training). Covered in silica-free East Quogue quarry sand, the upscale personality of this pitch goes beyond mere sea silt, as there are also cabanas surrounding it all. Guests attending the Bow-Wow are invited to either play volleyball, or just wear flip-flops and dig in their toes.
Tickets are available in advance for $50 (until Monday, Sept. 10), or $65 at the door; for purchase and information go to petpeeves.org or call 516-692-7387.
