Big wrestling weekend in area, with 2 shows on LI
If you're at all tired of the wrestling you've been getting from WWE and TNA as of late, this is a great weekend to sample a number of exciting alternatives. No less than four major independent wrestling shows are being held tomorrow in our area, including a couple right here on Long Island featuring some pretty big names from WWE and TNA. As well, there are a couple of wrestling pay per views that should give fans of high impact, high athleticism wrestling plenty of bang for their buck.
Here's a round up of this weekend's events:. Tonight, Dragon Gate USA's "Enter The Dragon" show premieres on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. on iN DEMAND, TVN and Bell ExpressVU. Tonight's premiere on iN DEMAND will be on its secondary PPV channel. IN DEMAND will show "Enter The Dragon" this Saturday on its primary PPV channel at 11am, 4pm and again on its secondary PPV channel at 6pm EST. For those of you who haven't heard of DGUSA, the company is promoted by Gabe Sapolsky, the former Ring of Honor booker largely credited for helping put ROH on the map. DGUSA features a lot of exciting performers from the Japanese promotion, Dragon Gate, as well as some of the USA's top independent workers. This event, which took place in July, has been widely praised for its unparalleled athleticism. Get more info at dgusa.tv. . Speaking of Sapolsky, his other promotion, EVOLVE, is holding an event tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. at the Rahway Rec Centerin Rahway, NJ. The show is headlined by Bryan Danielson - known as Daniel Bryan in WWE - taking on Japanese sensation Munenori Sawa. Also on the card, Amazing Kong (formerly known as Awesome Kong in TNA) takes on Mercedes Martinez in what many fans of women's wrestling consider something of a dream match. Tickets start at just $15 and are available at evolvewrestling.com. . Also at the Rahway Rec Center Saturday, there's a pretty special pro wrestling convention being held. Wrestling Reunion will feature dozens of stars from the past and present signing autographs, including Kevin Nash, Sgt. Slaughter, Magnum TA, Abdullah the Butcher, and many more. General admission is just $15. Golden tickets, which include autographs and photos with all the guests, cost $185 and will be available at the door. For more info visit wrestlingreunion.com. . If you're a big fan of Daniel Bryan and can't make it to Rahway, you'll have a second chance to see him person right here on Long Island Saturday night, when he headlined the New York Wrestling Connection's show "Never Back Down." Bryan will be teaming with NYWC Champion "Maverick" Tony Nese to take on the team of The "Greek God" Dimitrios Papadon & "Yours Truly" Alex Reynolds. General admission tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For more info, check out nywcwrestling.com. . Another Long Island-based indy, Fight the World Wrestling, is holding a show of its own Saturday night at Center Island Sports in Ronkonkoma. "Rage in the Cage" is headlined by FTW Champion Grim Reefer taking on Jay Lover in a cage. The show will feature an appearance by Long Island's most famous wrestling personality, Mick Foley, who will be available for autographs. The Iron Sheik is also scheduled to appear. Foley will also be holding a training seminar Sunday at the FTW Training Academy in Ronkonkoma. For more info, check out ftwprowrestling.com. . And finally, one of the biggest Ring of Honor events of this, or any year is taking place Saturday night at the Manhattan Center. And if you can't check out in person, "Glory be Honor IX" will be streamed live as an Internet exclusive pay per view on gofightlive.tv. The big show is loaded with big matches, including El Generico & Colt Cabana taking on Kevin Steen & Steve Corino in a double chains match, the WWE-bound Tyler Black defending his ROH title against Roderick Strong, and The Kings of Wrestling, Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli, taking on former WWE tag team champions, the reunited Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas in a tag team dream match.
