Giuseppe Rossi was cut by Italian manager Marcello Lippi in his final 23 man World Cup roster for Italy.

Rossi, a New Jersey native with an Italian father, was recently featured on ESPN the Magazine's cover as "Meet America's Best Hope at the World Cup."  The striker gave up what would've been a starring role for the American national team in the hopes of making Italy's squad.

From his Twitter account:

didnt make it, but i have no regrets...worked hard and showed what i could do..i gues the coach had other plans. good luck Italy..less than a minute ago via web

His omission comes as a bit of a surprise. This is the same player who sliced-up the American defense in last year's Confederations Cup coming off the bench. Entering in the 55 minute, Rossi scored two bombs that left U.S goalie Tim Howard in a bit of a stupor.

Check out his goals below at the 6:20 and 9:06 minute marks.
