MANTI TE'O'S FAKE GIRLFRIEND
We rang in the New Year with one of the strangest stories -- sports or otherwise -- of all time. The Notre Dame linebacker supposedly played the entire 2012 college football season after his girlfriend Lennay Kekua died of leukemia. Except Kekua wasn't real, a Jan. 16 Deadspin article revealed shortly after Te'o and Notre Dame lost to Alabama in the national championship game. Te'o and Kekua had been involved in an online relationship and never met face to face. Te'o gave his first interview following Deadspin's article on Jan. 18 exclusively to ESPN's Jeremy Schaap. He denied being involved in the hoax and said Ronaiah Tuiasosopo admitted he was behind the myth. |(Credit: AP)
