World Series ring thief caught
If you're going to steal World Series rings from a team office, a piece of advice: don't also apply for a job when you're in said office.
For one guy attending Game of the Rockies-Phillies ALDS today, that's apparently what happened.
From the AP story:
Police say 22-year-old Matthew Mervine of Berlin, N.J., was videotaped taking the rings Thursday. They say he had also left his contact information on a job application.
The purloined rings are cheaper models of the $11,000 rings given to players. They are worth about $1,100 and intended for scouts.
Police found them at Mervine’s home when he was arrested on theft charges. He does not have a listed phone number and it’s not clear if he has a lawyer.

Does Queens give Isles fans hope?
Charles Wang said Saturday he is open to exploring his options - i.e. relocating and/or selling Islanders - and one high ranking Queens official wasted no time going on record saying he wants them in Willets Points.
It's crazy to think NYC is still four or five years from putting a shovel in the ground at Willets Point, and yet doesn't it feel as if there's a greater chance of that project happening as opposed to the Lighthouse?
BTW, If Islanders moved to Queens, I'd assume they could keep their name in tact and no one would mind, right?

I don't think Wally Matthews thinks too highly of Jeff Wilpon
Call me crazy, but that's my hunch.
Read Wally's column from today and decide for yourself.

The strange tale of Ted Williams' frozen head and a tuna can
By the Associated Press
PHOENIX — A new book by a former employee of Alcor, the company that froze Ted Williams’ remains, alleges the baseball Hall of Famer’s body was mistreated by the company.
Larry Johnson says in the book “Frozen” that he watched an Alcor official swing a monkey wrench at Williams’ frozen severed head to try to remove a tuna can stuck to it. The first swing accidentally struck the head dead-on, Johnson contends, and the second knocked the tuna can loose.Alcor Life Extension Foundation, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., issued a statement on its Web site denying the allegations and promising litigation.

Jets, Titans, Oilers. Well, someone beat someone Sunday at Giants Stadium
Love the AFL retro thing, and the NFL record books will reflect that the New York Jets beat the Tennessee Titans 24-17 Sunday at the Meadowlands.
But the Jets were wearing Titans uniforms and the Titans were wearing Oilers uniforms. So did the Jets beat the Titans, did the Titans beat the Oilers, or did the Titans beat themselves.
Food for thought. Unless you're a Lions fan, of course.

Hey, look, it's Brooks Simpson in today's LI Life on the 1969 Mets!
According to Brooks' first-person story in today's newspaper, he used to be a reporter, just like us! And you can't tell by the way this photo has been cropped, but trust me - he's proudly sporting his Islanders hat.
I wonder in 40 some years if there will be a special section commemorating the beginning of the Lighthouse Project?
