Yankees ratings on YES rebound from 2013

The 2010s have seen a steady decline in Yankees ratings on YES, bottoming out last season after a 31-percent drop in viewership during the Bombers’ playoff-free campaign.

But thus far in 2014, things are looking up, with an average of 283,000 viewers per game tuning into YES, a rise of 24 percent compared to the All-Star break last season.

Still, that is a far cry from, say, 2007, when...

YES says no to TWIF

The glut of NFL-related debate on TV – led by ESPN and NFL Network – makes it difficult for local channels to compete for eyeballs, even ones with team-specific coverage such as SNY’s well-regarded Jets postgame show.

That surely was true for YES’ “This Week in Football,’’ which has been around since the network’s inception in 2002 but has struggled to generate ratings sufficient to justify...

O's Angel aces Jeter call

Remember Monday when John Sterling, Michael Kay and Derek Jeter himself all wrongly anticipated a ball he hit deep to leftfield at Yankee Stadium would land over the wall?

It prompted Newsday copy editor Craig Bustin to ask the sort of question good copy editors ask: Did the Orioles’ announcers get it right?

So I listened to Joe Angel, the O’s radio play-by-play voice and long-ago partner...

Michael Kay weighed in on his ESPN New York Radio show Thursday afternoon on the matter of Daniel Murphy's two-game paternity leave, and about what other talk show hosts have said about it, especially on WFAN.

He called out Boomer Esiason by name.

There was much yelling involved.

Here ya go:

"I’d have to be an unbelievably narcissistic baboon to make my choice on somebody...

Michael Kay's YES Network simulcast of his ESPN New York Radio show, which began two months ago Thursday, has averaged 19,000 viewers, YES said, citing Nielsen data for the New York area.

That is higher than the 14,000 viewers Mike Francesa's WFAN simulcast averaged during the same time frame in 2013, with Francesa's show coming at significantly more cost to YES.

Kay's viewership presumably...

Mike Francesa on TV simulcast: 'Have a little patience'

Mike Francesa talks about what a typical day

Opening Day began a new era in local New York baseball media, with the Mets on WOR radio and Mike Francesa for the first time in his career hosting a WFAN show during a Mets game.

Tuesday night will bring another change: YES carrying a simulcast of Michael Kay’s ESPN New York radio show on a day when YES’ play-by-play man will call a regular-season Yankees game.

How will that work logistically?

The...

The YES Network saw a boost in its average Nets rating Sunday night for the debut of Jason Collins, averaging 1.3 percent of homes in the New York area and peaking at 1.8 percent late in the victory over the Lakers.

YES has been averaging around 0.8 ratings for the Nets. Sunday's game was the network's seventh-highest-rated this season to date.

The big media loser in the historic evening...

Michael Kay's simulcast ratings become more realistic

I do not plan to do regular updates on Michael Kay's TV simulcast ratings, but I did promise several Twitter followers last week that I would update them after his first week on the YES Network, so here goes:

Kay averaged 0.61 percent of homes on his first day last Monday, which is quite impressive - and not sustainable.

After that he settled into more realistic territory closer to what...

Michael Kay fires back at Mike Francesa

Fox Sports 1 has emerged as a contender to simulcast Mike Francesa’s WFAN radio show, which if it occurs could make for some very interesting company picnics.

Now that Fox is set to increase its stake in the YES Network to 80 percent, the simulcasts of both Francesa’s show and Michael Kay’s ESPN New York radio show could both be on Fox-owned channels.

Did I mention Francesa and Kay are...
