SNY seeks new sports talk angle

Less than a week after Michelle Beadle complained to Sports Media Weekly about NBCSN’s lack of promotion for her show, “The Crossover,’’ the program was cancelled Wednesday, a casualty of the current glut of sports TV talk. (The New York Times was the first to report the news.)

It is not easy getting attention in the increasingly crowded genre. But that doesn’t keep people from trying.

Next up: SNY, which at 6 p.m. Monday premieres “Covino & Rich,’’ a TV version of the longtime partners’ Sirius XM Satellite Radio show.

The half-hour program will replace pregame Mets programming at least through the start of the 2014 season.

Brad Como, SNY’s vice president of studio programming and production, was impressed with the duo’s radio show during Super Bowl week in early 2012 and sought a suitable place for them.

Adding to the appeal was balance: Rich Davis is a Mets fan from Franklin Square; Steve Covino is a Yankees fan from New Jersey.

“You’re always looking for chemistry, and those guys have been working together for 10 years,’’ Como said. “They are at the point where they finish each other’s sentences.’’

The goal is a casual, humorous take heavy on pop culture references and light on Xs and Os, one that will speak to a younger audience.

“It’s a lot different than anything we’ve done, so that’s why it appealed to me,’’ Como said.

Como said during a recent rehearsal some younger staffers in the back of the control room were "cracking up and laughing. I think some of the older people didn’t get some of the references."

SNY's existing late-afternoon sports talk shows, "Daily News Live" and "Loud Mouths," have averaged 0.17 percent and 0.16 percent of New York-area homes, respectively, since the start of the baseball season.

DNL is up 21 percent over a similar period last year and "Loud Mouths" is up 45 percent.
