Heat wave strains power systems
Today's heat is pushing the needle on thermometers -- and on the power grid.
For the 11th time this year, Orange & Rockland Utilities issued a "Summer Heat Watch" and predicted power usage of more than 1,370 megawatts, spokesman Mike Donovan said.
To put that number in context, one megawatt is usually enough to power about 1,000 homes. O&R has 300,000 customers -- including businesses -- and their combined power usage today is usually enough to power 1,370,000 homes at any other time of year. That's a lot of air conditioners humming away at full blast.
The temperature as of 2:55 p.m. -- the time of this blog post -- is 90 degrees, with a heat index of 93. Stay cool.
