These two kids should be spotlighted because: Gabrielle's aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. Shortly after, Taylor Fleishhacker and Gabrielle Vessa (8th - 9th graders) organized some girls from Manhasset to fight breast cancer, a disease that is prevalent on Long Island. They formed The Manhasset Junior Coalition against Breast Cancer, a charitable organization that operates under the Women's Coalition. Beginning with 7 girls, the Jr. Coalition has grown to 100 members encompassing 9th - 12th graders. Fundraising efforts raised $65,000 to help research facilities at NYU, North Shore-LIJ, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Cold Spring Harbor Labs and Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline. Through the Pink Ball, Pink Ribbon Dance, Pink Beach Party, Baby Sit for a Cure, pink bracelets sales and their latest "Pink goes Green"canvas shopping bags, the girls were able to unite teenagers in the fight against breast cancer. The girls have also visited the above programs receiving valuable information about breast cancer.
