NEW HEMPSTEAD - Strong storms knocked out power for communities across the Hudson Valley Monday afternoon.

At the height of the storms, utility companies were reporting 2,000 customers without electricity. Power has since been returned to a large majority of those customers.

A spokesperson for O&R says powerful winds and rain at around 3 p.m. brought down several hundred feet of power lines in New Hempstead and caused a small fire on New Hempstead Road.

Sources say that electrical fire also damaged a gas line on the roadway, which has remained closed since the incident.

A tornado watch was in effect for parts of the Hudson Valley until 5 p.m., but no tornadoes were reported.
