TARRYTOWN - Just as boaters get ready to enjoy the Hudson River this season, construction on the new Tappan Zee Bridge is heating up.
With over 50 construction vessels on the Hudson right now and more expected this summer, Westchester County police say there is an increased hazard for boaters. Concern comes on the heels of last summer's so-called “tragedy on the Hudson,” when bride-to-be Lindsay Stewart and her groom's best man Mark Lennon were killed after their boat slammed into a Tappan Zee construction barge. Four others were injured.
New laws restrict boaters to travel at no more than 5 knots in a 500-yard area near the bridge.
The Tappan Zee Bridge project is not expected to be completed until 2018.
