How 2... How to transfer contacts from one e-mail account to another
Don't waste your time transferring all of your contacts one by one to a new e-mail account.
1. If you are exporting contacts from Microsoft Outlook, open your contacts and select "Import and Export" from the File menu.
2. Select "Export to a file" and click Next. Choose "Comma Separated Values (Windows)" and click Next. Select your contacts and click Next. Name the file, choose where you want to save it and click Next. Click Finish.
3. If you are using another e-mail program, you should be able to export contacts in a similar manner. In Gmail, click on Contacts and then choose to export your contacts. In Hotmail, click on Options and then choose "Export contacts" under "Customize your contacts." In Yahoo Mail, click on Contacts and then choose Import/Export.
4. If you are importing your contacts into Microsoft Outlook, choose Import and Export from the File menu and choose "Import from another program or file." Choose Next, select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)" and click Next. Use the Browse button to locate your file and click Next. Select your contacts folder, click Next and click Finish.
5. If you are importing to a Web-based e-mail program such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail, follow the instructions in No. 3, but choose to import contacts instead of exporting them.
If you are using AOL Mail, there's no easy way to export your contacts, but you can import from another program. You can import by clicking on Contacts and then choosing "Import."

November 23, 2008
What's involved in a switch from Windows to Linux? An editor and a couple of readers posed that question after last week's column. Given the proliferation of cheap Linux-based "netbooks" it is worth a systematic look.
