Turn PowerPoint presentations into videos and post them online
E-mailing a PowerPoint presentation to someone who couldn't make the meeting isn't the same as being there in person. So why not add narration to your slides and post the presentation online as a video? Here's how:
1. Open up the PowerPoint presentation you want to turn into a video, click on your first slide and choose "Record Narration" from the "Slide Show" menu. Make sure you have a working microphone and click "OK."
2. When your first slide appears in slide show mode, begin speaking into the microphone. When you are ready to move on to the next slide, hit the right arrow key. Stop talking right before you hit the arrow key and don't start talking again until the next slide comes up. When you are finished, choose to save the slide timings with the narrations for each slide.
3. Go to authorSTREAM.com and click "Upload PowerPoint." Fill out all the fields to create a new account and click "Register."
4. Click "Upload your first PowerPoint file," locate the presentation you want to upload, and fill out the rest of the information (title, description, etc.). If you choose to make your presentation private, people you invite to view it will have to create a free authorSTREAM account. When you are finished, click "Upload Presentation."
5. You will get an e-mail notifying you when your presentation has been uploaded. To view it, click on "My Uploaded Presentations." You can get the code to embed it on a blog, upload it to YouTube, download it as a video file or view it in iTunes so you can transfer it to an iPod. You can also copy the link to the presentation so you can share it.

A primer on switching from Windows to Linux
November 23, 2008
What's involved in a switch from Windows to Linux? An editor and a couple of readers posed that question after last week's column. Given the proliferation of cheap Linux-based "netbooks" it is worth a systematic look.
