Canelo not looking past Trout
Much like Nonito Donaire, Mexican sensation Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has said he wants to fight best. Alvarez hasn’t always had luck getting the big bouts, fighting the likes of Shane Mosley, Kermit Cintron Matthew Hatton and Lovemore Ndou.
Most, if not all, of those fighters are past their prime and not real contenders.
That won’t be the case on Saturday, April 20 at the Alamodome in San Antonio when Alvarez (41-0-1) puts his WBC 154-pound title on the line against WBA super light middleweight champ Austin Trout (26-0).
The fight will be broadcast live on SHOWTIME.
Trout shocked many in the boxing world with is unanimous-decision win over Miguel Cotto last December 12 at Madison Square Garden, prompting Alvarez to demand a bout against in.
“We had Cotto in mind. We wanted to fight Miguel Angel Cotto but obviously when he beat him we saw a fight that we wanted to do,” Alvarez said. “Austin Trout's undefeated. He's a world champion, very difficult style, strong southpaw, but this also gave me the motivation to go on and fight one of the best and we consider him as one of the best out there.”
Much was made of Alvarez wanting to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. In fact, industry sources said Alvarez agreed to fight on the Mayweather-Roberg Guerrero undercard. But the condition was that Mayweather would have to guarantee a fight against Alvarez in November.
Mayweather balked, prompting Alvarez to move his bout to April 20.
Alvarez wouldn’t talk about a potential bout with Mayweather or Victor Ortiz.
"Right now my focus is 100% only on Austin Trout and that's all I'm thinking of,” said Alvarez. “After the fight, we'll sit down, discuss what's next, but right now I'm focused only on Austin Trout and, God willing, winning this fight.
Is there a possibility of an Alvarez-Mayweather bout in the fall? That depends on how well Mayweather performs against Guerrero, according to most experts. Since both fighters are affiliated with Golden Boy Promotions, it makes a future bout very likely.
