James Burke graduated from the Suffolk police academy in November 1986 and became a Suffolk Police officer at 21. But his association with the force began when Burke was a 14-year-old witness in a murder case. Burke recalled that he "looked up to the homicide detectives, I looked up to the prosecutors. I saw how confident, how professional they were and I wanted to be like that."
