The Miami Art Museum was founded in 1996 and succeeded the Center for the Fine Arts as the city's contemporary art museum. Located in Downtown Miami, the museum emphasizes art from the 20th century to the present. Its permanent holdings have been referred to as "the quintessential Miami collection" by Art in America magazine. That is to say that the MAM's internationally-flavored collection reflects the multi-cultured makeup of the city where it resides. The Art Museum of Miami's art season alternates between originally curated exhibitions to traveling shows. Some recent presentations include "Wangechi Mutu," "Ana Mendieta: Earth, Body, Sculpture and Performance 1972-85," "Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures," and "Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller: The Killing Machine and Other Stories 1995-2007." In November 2004, Miami Dade County voters approved a bond that includes $100 million for a new site for the Miami Art Museum. Award-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron will design the facility, and it will border a 29-acre property, now called Museum Park, overlooking Biscayne Bay in Downtown Miami. The new museum is estimated at 129,000 square feet. It will house 32,000 square feet of galleries, an educational complex with a library, an auditorium, classrooms and a workshop space, as well as a cafe and store. Also slated for construction is an outdoor sculpture garden. MAM will remain open at its original site on Flagler Street until Museum Park is constructed. Miami Art Museum (MAM) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit educational institution with a civic Board of Trustees. MAM was accredited by the American Association of Museums and reaccredited in 2001. The Museum of Art is located at 101 West Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33130.
