Highlights

New World explorer Captain John Smith didn't join the colonists who made up the initial landing party in Jamestown in 1607 -- he was actually below deck in chains at that time. Later, he was acquitted of mutiny and became a member of Jamestown's governing council. Though captured by Indians, Smith was released in friendship after about four weeks and returned to Jamestown, and his conviction that Princess Pocahontas had saved his life has passed into legend.
