Salisbury moves to 20-0, gains semifinals with rout of Cabrini

Defending national champion Salisbury continued its march toward another title by defeating visiting Cabrini, 15-7, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament.

Salisbury (20-0) took a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of unassisted scores. With just under seven minutes left in the first quarter, Salisbury had a 4-0 lead before the Cavaliers got on the scoreboard when sophomore Casey Grugan sent a shot past the Sea Gulls' keeper as time expired.

Each team scored a goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter, with the Cavaliers' score coming from senior Matt McKinney before the Sea Gulls converted a man-up opportunity with less than three minutes left in the half.

Salisbury added two goals in the final 30 seconds of the half - the first score after a turnover by the Cavaliers at midfield - to build an 8-2 lead at the break.

Cabrini (17-13) struck first in the second half, with junior Matt Conaway scoring less than three minutes in, but the Sea Gulls responded with a goal of their own within 45 seconds.

Seniors Pat Jenkins and Dan DeRosa connected five minutes into the third to get the Cavaliers within five and, less than a minute later, sophomore Rich Romanelli added a goal for Cabrini. Both teams added a score in the final 1 1/2 minutes of the third period and Salisbury held a 10-6 lead heading into the fourth.

Salisbury restored its lead to five at the 13:45 mark and scored again four minutes later. The Sea Gulls outscored Cabrini 5-1 in the fourth quarter to claim the win.

• Gettysburg 12, Washington College 5 // The third-ranked and host Bullets (17-2) held the fifth-ranked Shoremen (14-4) scoreless for the first 26:21 of the game en route to the win at Musselman Stadium. The Bullets scored the first six goals before Washington got on the board with 3:39 to play in the opening half when senior attackman Chris Read (Boys' Latin) found junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Archbishop Curley) for a goal. Andrew Generazio led Washington with two goals, while Nick Gregory (South River) and Kolyn Kirby each had a goal and an assist.
