Hurricane Charey came ashore near Punta Gorda as a Category 4 storm on Aug. 13, 2004 -- also Friday the 13th. By 9 p.m. Charley was blowing through the Orlando area with 90-mph sustained winds that gusted to 105 mph. It was the area's first direct hit by a hurricane since 1960 when Hurricane Donna crossed Central Florida.
An estimated 1.5 million people were without electricity in Central Florida -- many for several days. Damage was widespread, but nothing like Charlotte County, where entire buildings disintergrated in winds that reach 145 mph. Three-three deaths were blamed on the hurricane, as well as $7.5 billion in insured losses.
