Nicki Grossman was named president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau in 1995. She oversees the marketing of Broward County, Florida to tourists worldwide and manages the county's convention center. During Nicki Grossman's tenure, the tourism market in Broward has dramatically shifted, moving beyond its longtime history as a spring break destination for college students to marketing itself as a posh possibility for families, gays and international travelers. Tourism has grown from 2.9 million visitors to a record 10.4 million people in 2006. Grossman's positively-posh campaign coincided with a major investment in the Fort Lauderdale area by luxury hotels and resorts. Over the past five years, they've invested more than $2 billion in such new properties as the St. Regis and W hotels in Fort Lauderdale and the Diplomat in Hollywood. Grossman spearheaded the Convention & Visitors Bureau's efforts to attract gay travelers beginning in 1996. As a result of the "Rolling Out the Rainbow Carpet" campaign, this market has grown to rank as one of the top domestic destinations for gay travelers. Grossman has often turned to unconventional methods in luring tourists to visit Broward County. In 2004, she commissioned a mobile beach complete with palms trees, models and beach balls that tours Northeast and Midwest markets in the winter and is used during high-profile events like the Super Bowl. Grossman was also key in developing the coast(954) store in New York City to promote the area. Nicki Grossman's work in tourism follows a lengthy career in South Florida politics. She was elected to the Hollywood City Commission in 1978 and to the Broward County Commission in 1982. Nicki Grossman was born in Miami Beach and is married to Circuit Judge Mel Grossman. They have three daughters. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau's web address is www.ftlauderdalecc.com
