On Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2008, five students were shot to death in a lecture hall by a former student, who then killed himself. The gunman, Steven Kazmierczak, opened fire around 3 p.m. without warning in an ocean science course in NIU¿s Cole Hall. Killed were NIU students Gayle Dubowski, 20; Catalina Garcia, 20; Julianna Gehant, 32: Ryanne Mace, 19; and Daniel Parmenter, 20. Diverging profiles of Kazmierczak, who was regarded as a warm, high-achieving graduate student in NIU¿s sociology department, emerged after the shooting. He had transferred to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to continue his graduate studies and while there had gotten elaborate tattoos with horror movie images on his arms. After the NIU shooting, Kazmierczak's former girlfriend, Jessica Baty, who shared an apartment with him in Urbana, said in a CNN interview that he had stopped taking his medication, seemed ¿quicker to get annoyed.¿ No immediate motive was determined as to why Kazmierczak went on the shooting rampage. He left no note and removed the hard drive from his laptop computer and the SIM card--a key computer chip--from his cell phone.
