Highlights

This leading U.S. troupe began as a small endeavor in 1956, a handful of dancers touring the country with station wagon and a U-Haul trailer, led by co-founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino. For the next four decades, the Joffrey emerged as one of America's preeminent ballet troupes. By the 1980s, the troupe easily ranked third after the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre in terms of international prominence. In 1988, Joffrey died of AIDS. Arpino continued alone, although hard times nearly shut down the organization. Arpino re-located the troupe in the mid-1990s to Chicago, where it flourished and endures as a top arts organization.
