The Miami International Film Festival was founded in 1983 by longtime film programmer Nat Chediak. Chediak handpicked an average of 26 films over each year's 10-day run, in contrast to other local festivals with much larger lineups. In 1999, Florida International University took over the festival from Chediak's nonprofit, private Film Society of Miami, increasing the event's size and scope. Chediak resigned in May 2001 citing creative differences with FIU, which was intent on expanding the festival further. In 1999, Florida International University took over the festival from Chediak's nonprofit, private Film Society of Miami, increasing the event's size and scope. Chediak resigned in May 2001 citing creative differences with FIU, which was intent on expanding the festival further. He was replaced by Internet journalist David Poland, who doubled the number of films and tripled the venues, but then resigned shortly after a single year in which attendance plummeted. Nicole Guillemet, formerly of the Sundance Film Festival, stepped in as festival director, a role she held through early 2007. Guillemet was at the helm of the festival in the summer of 2003, when FIU decided to withdraw its sponsorship of the festival after losing $20 million in state funding and amassing a deficit of $800,000 over two years. Miami Dade College assumed sponsorship in October 2003. Patrick de Bokay, former executive director of the first Bangkok International Film Festival, director of marketing for 20th Century Fox in Paris and vice president of international marketing for Turner Pictures Worldwide Distribution in Los Angeles, was named director of the festival in March 2007.  « Show less
