Summary

Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall opened in the Mount Royal cultural district in 1982 as the new home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The project was initiated by then-BSO president Joseph Meyerhoff, who donated $10 million. The city pitched in $2.5 million, and the state contributed $10.5 million for the construction. The opening day performance included pianist Leon Fleisher's return to two-handed performance. The circular, 2,443-seat hall is praised for both its looks and acoustics. It was constructed without flat walls or 90-degree angles, creating an ideal concert-going experience with unobstructed views. It is also one of the few concert halls that has box seats over the stage. In 1997, five summer...

It was constructed without flat walls or 90-degree angles, creating an ideal concert-going experience with unobstructed views. It is also one of the few concert halls that has box seats over the stage. In 1997, five summers of renovations began, including a three-year acoustic readjustment. Improvements included installation of risers on stage, sound diffusers, a modern sound system and a new acoustic canopy. In addition to the BSO, touring acts such as Jerry Seinfeld, the Indigo Girls, Harry Connick Jr. and Aretha Franklin, as well as local groups, have performed at the hall.

Joan Tower: a first among women
Sun Music CriticJoan Tower has run into a string of bad luck recently, which is unusual for her. Organist gives Messiaen works a vibrant turn

BSO's gift to Bach lovers

Soloist, BSO play Gershwin with vim
Sun music criticAn irresistible, possibly apocryphal anecdote finds George Gershwin in Paris asking Maurice Ravel for lessons on orchestration. Ravel's reply: "Why should I turn you into a second-rate Ravel when you are already a first-rate Gershwin?" Then, told what...Tags: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Maurice Joseph Ravel, Marin Alsop, Music, Fashion Trends
