Kermit the Frog sprang from the mind of Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, in 1955. It wasn't until Kermit's appearance on "Sesame Street" in 1969 that he started to gain widespread popularity. On that PBS children's show, his role frequently was that of a news reporter, but one of his well-known segments was merely him singing "Bein' Green," a melancholy song about self-worth that eventually leads to self-acceptance. Kermit served as host of the syndicated "The Muppet Show," a show produced from 1975 to 1981.

He served as producer of a wacky stage show, which included characters such as Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Rowlf the dog, Sam the Eagle, The Great Gonzo, Animal, the Swedish Chef and dozens more. He has also appeared in several movies, including "The Muppet Movie" (where he sang the Oscar-nominated "The Rainbow Connection") and "The Muppets Take Manhattan," in which Miss Piggy claims they were married. Other appearances include as guest host for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show" in 1979, in the audience of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," on "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart, as a commentator on VH1's "I Love the '70s" series and as grand marshal of the Tournament of Roses parade. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Kermit and friends can be seen in a 3-D presentation called Muppetvision at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., and at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, Calif.
Kermit's voice was provided by Henson until his death in 1990. Puppeteer Steve Whitmire then took over.
