Summary
Lyme Disease is caused by bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted by the bite of deer ticks. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and often, but not always, by erythemia migrans, better known as the ¿bulls eye¿ rash. Most cases are treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics. But left untreated, Lyme disease can spread to joints, the heart and nervous system. A cluster of people suffering from these symptoms in Lyme, Conn., led to the first identification of the disease in 1975. The disease has since been reported in many areas of the United States but most cases still occur in wooded areas of the Northeast, upper Midwest and along the Pacific Coast. The disease has since been reported in many areas of the United States but most cases still occur in wooded areas of the Northeast, upper Midwest and along the Pacific Coast. The disease is diagnosed by clinical symptoms. In later stages of the disease, laboratory tests can help detect presence of Lyme disease. Health officials urge people to take precautions in areas where the disease is endemic. Wear long pants, long sleeves and use insect repellent while walking in wooded areas. Also, people should check themselves and pets regularly for ticks.
