The Clinic's main campus of 37 buildings on Cleveland's University Circle boasts a hospital, outpatient center, eye institute, cancer center and research institute, and the Clinic also owns a dozen community hospitals elsewhere in Ohio, one in Weston, Fla., and one in Toronto, Canada. In partnership with nearby Case Western Reserve University, the Clinic opened a medical school in 2002. And the hospital's executives are now working with the government of oil-rich Abu Dhabi to build the first overseas Cleveland Clinic there, a luxurious health center targeted to open in 2010. Cleveland Clinic was founded in 1921 by four doctors who had worked together in a WWI battlefield hospital and observed they did better when they collaborated. They organized their doctor-owned institution under a group-practice model, where all the doctors are salaried employees rather than independent practitioners credentialed to practice there. Throughout all the seismic changes in modern medicine brought by health insurance, managed care and government health programs, the Clinic's model has survived and thrived. In 2007, the Clinic's 1,700 doctors and scientists treated about 3 million patients, and pulled in about $150 million in research grants. The organization was one of the nation's three busiest centers for heart transplants and a leader in heart valve surgery. Among many medical breakthroughs claimed by Clinic doctors and researchers: The first time stopping and restarting a heart for surgery (1956); the first angiography, a test done by threading a device through an artery into the heart (1958); key work identifying cholesterol as a risk of heart attack (1958-68); key improvements in heart bypass surgery (1967); first minimally invasive heart valve surgery (1996); first successful larynx transplant (1999), and the discovery of the first gene linked to coronary artery disease (2003). The Clinic has had its share of controversy, notably in its expansion into South Florida. Its first attempt in 1987 to build a hospital in Weston, a wealthy suburb west of Fort Lauderdale, met with passionate opposition from local doctors, who viewed the Clinic as an interloper and competitor. The new hospital failed on the launch pad when state regulators refused to issue an operating certificate, saying half of the area's hospital beds sat empty. Undaunted, the institution bought an aging hospital on Fort Lauderdale's barrier island in 1990, and five years later persuaded the state to let the Clinic and Tenet Healthcare build a new 150-bed hospital center in Weston in return for closing the old one. The new hospital opened in 2001, followed by another in nearby Naples. Eventually, the Clinic bought out Tenet and sold its Naples hospital.
