THE OSCARS
THE QUOTES
HOLLYWOOD - A sampling of what the winners said backstage at the Academy Awards:
*Tilda Swinton, best supporting actress, had been convinced earlier in the afternoon, while interviewed on the red carpet, that she wasn't going to win.
"I think it helped that I've never watched this thing on the television," the redhead said. "I didn't know what to expect.
"I kind of thought Ruby Dee would win. Frankly, anybody but myself."
She said "wow" to herself while walking down the aisle to accept the award because she was genuinely stunned, she said.
"I had a reverse 'Zoolander' moment. I think I heard someone else's name and suddenly sloooooooowly heard my own. I'm still recovering from that moment," she said 30 minutes later while in a backstage interview room.
*One reporter thanked Brad Bird, winner of animated feature for "Ratatouille," for helping change her loathing toward rats.
"I think it's just fun to go into a volatile situation," Bird said. "A rat is death to a kitchen, and a kitchen is death to a rat."
*Best actress Marion Cotillard, when asked which song represented her feelings of victory, chose "Padam Padam," and she sang the first few lines, at a reporter's request.
She said making movie consumed her.
"Well, I really dedicated my life to the movie and to Piaf," she said. "When the movie was finished ... I realized that I didn't have a life and I didn't know how exactly to go back. But I love life."
