Pathfinder

Loincloth-and-sword tale released without criticsÂ’ review

Pathfinder

Karl Urban stars in "Pathfinder." (Doug Curran/20th Century Fox)

A film like "Pathfinder," the story of a Viking child raised by Native Americans who ends up battling his own people, probably doesn't need much publicity to draw its target audience—those inclined to see a film with a swords-and-loincloths premise probably wouldn't care what reviewers might have to say. And so, Fox didn't bother to screen the film for online critics.

The action epic (which clocks in at a not-so-epic 96 minutes) was originally set to open last June. Then it was pushed to later in the summer, then to fall, then to January and finally opens today, almost a full year after the initial date and outside of the more competitive summer season. And on a Friday the 13th no less.

Considering the massive success of "300," it's clear that audiences have an appetite for period action films, but the buzz surrounding this one hasn't been quite as hot. In fact, there's hardly been any buzz at all.

With a cast of non-stars including Karl Urban (you might remember him from small roles in "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Lord of the Rings" or the lead role in "Doom") and Moon Bloodgood (maybe you saw her in ABC's short-lived Taye Diggs series, "Daybreak," but probably not) and the director responsible for the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake at the helm, "Pathfinder" doesn't exactly pop out at a crowded multiplex. Except, of course, to those who had been long lamenting a dearth of "Conan the Barbarian"–inspired film releases.
